Item Details

This listing is for a vintage copy of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st Edition Fiend Folio "The Tome of Creatures Malevolent and Benign" edited by Don Turnbull. This 128-page hardcover book was released in 1981 and added so many weird and wonderful monsters to the AD&D game.

This hardcover book contains some of the nastiest monsters ever created for the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons game. The monsters are the products of the United Kingdom and are cited as the first major contribution from the British Isles.

It has always been one of my favorite books, probably because it always made my players cringe at the mere sight of it. This tome of monsters is full of awesome illustrations. I've heard it said that the Fiend Folio is not a favorite of some DMs because of the silly monsters contained within its pages. After all, who could fear a Flumph? Or a Tirapheg? Well, that all depends on the DM. A clever DM might give the tiraphegs a few "bonuses" so that it has something really nasty (perhaps a one-use item) that will really challenge the characters during the round they are confused. Even if you don't have the time or interest to tweak the "silly" monsters, you have the Githyanki with their silver swords or, one of my personal favorites, the Sons of Kyuss. How can you beat a monster that looks really gross, regenerates, has an aura of fear, and shoots fat green worms that can burrow into your brain?

Also, Lolth, Githzerai, and Grells. These will easily make up for any "silly" monsters. And remember, they are only silly until they eat your player's faces off!

The berbalang spends the greater part of each month in an apparently dormant state, hibernating preferably in a well-hidden cave. Though seemingly comatose, the berbalang is actually roaming the Astral Plane where it spends its time hunting creatures weaker than itself... Using the new encounter tables contained herein, this work is sure to add new excitement to any AD&D game.

Condition

This book is in Good condition showing some use and wear. The cover shows moderate wear at the corners, heavy creasing at the binding, and a few scratches. There are some small scratches on the bottom of the back cover inside and out. Not sure what caused this. I suspect someone was playing with a staple remover? There are a few smudges.

The interior has a few scratches and small tears along a few pages. I think it was the staple remover again. There are 3 small tears at the bottom of page 93. There is an orange stain on the front cover page. There are a number of smudges, a few stray pencil marks, and some discolored spots. There is a stray pen mark on one page.

While not in true collectible quality, this fine tome is still sturdy and ready for more adventures.
